Ever wonder how photographers get that jet black background that makes the subject pop right out of the page? This style has become extremely popular with good reason. It showcases your best bud nicely and puts their trophies front and center (if included). There are several ways to accomplish this.
One way to achieve this would be to hang a physical black background behind your subject. This is the easiest way, but also has some challenges. First the physical background has to be really big if photographing a horse. The horse needs to be set up a distance from the backdrop for safety and by doing so puts a distance between the subject and backdrop causing the backdrop to appear smaller. The camera also needs to be a distance from the subject to preserve proportions. This also contributes to making the backdrop appear smaller.
Another way would be to "photoshop" a black background behind the subject. This takes expertise to cut out the subject so that it doesn't appear "cut out". It takes skill with a software program such as photoshop and it takes a lot of time if done right.
The best way would be to create the black background in camera while shooting. This is the most natural and beautiful way but also is the least chosen way because it takes times and practice and education to be able achieve that. A truly professional photographer continues their education and practice throughout their career. They learn to master lighting and their camera. They will know how to capture the light and where to place the subject. This isn't a formula that can be used with every shoot. The light will be different every hour of every day. The location, even when placing the subject in the same place at every shoot will not face toward or away from the sun at the same angle. Someone can put the subject in a doorway as an example, but not in just the right place according to the light that is falling in that spot.
When you want the best images that will last a lifetime, hire the photographer who knows how to capture your images right in the camera.
